Vika & Linda
Played Sundays through July, 2001
In 1994, Vika and Linda took centre stage after five years as featured backing vocalists in the million seller super group 'The Black Sorrows, when they recorded and released their self-titled debut album.
The Vika and Linda album was produced by Paul Kelly and songs were co-written with Paul, Mark Seymour, Nick Barker, Wayne Burt and featured the crème de la crème of Melbourne musicians. The album featured the hits 'When Will You Fall For Me', 'House of Love' and 'We've Started A Fire'. The album sold platinum and the girls hit the road and toured solidly for the next 18 months.
The album was also packaged with a limited edition bonus disc of Gospel songs. Vika and Linda have always had a penchant for Gospel and performed sell out shows featuring these Gospel tracks with their friends.
In 1996, after many miles of travelling both locally and overseas, as headline and as support to major international artists, Vika and Linda commenced writing with Paul Kelly, Michael Barker, Barry Palmer, Mark 'Diesel' Lizotte and Tim Finn. They enlisted the talents of UK producer Jeremy 'Massive Attack' Allom and Mark Lizotte to co-produce the second album alongside them. This recording again featured a pedigree cast of musicians. The critically acclaimed 'Princess Tabu' album was released in August of that year. The singles from this album being 'Love Comes Easy' and the beautiful, poignant 'Grandpa's Song'. This album brought to the forefront a traditional island flavour with the ever-strong popular home influence. This album attained Gold status.
Again, endless miles were travelled to sell out audiences on a national and international scale to promote this recording. A short hiatus was called while both girls and partners enjoyed becoming new parents. In between bottles and nappy changes, the girls took time out to return vocal recording favours with Paul Kelly and Chris Wilson on each of these artists' respective albums for that year. They also commenced writing songs for their third album.
In February 1999, Vika and Linda again entered the studios to record with Paul Kelly and Renee Geyer co-producing. The result was 'Two Wings'. With massive support from ABC regional and city stations, songs like 'Caution', 'If I Could Start Today Again', and 'Be Careful What You Prey For' have become very well known nationally.
The summer of 99/00 saw Vika and Linda take to the road and consolidate their positions as two of the finest songstresses in Australia. 2000 has seen more tours, a song on the Olympic album, 'Together a team' and a live album released in early November.
A reminder isn't needed to those who have been to a Vika and Linda gig of just how amazing these songstresses are in live performance.
